Lesson 6

UNIT ONE- choice 1
#1 I think the best way for me to “escape the corruption in this world,” is to shut off the TV, put down the filthy magazines and focus on me and my family. Sometimes I find myself consumed with the lives of celebrates and politicians that that’s all I can talk about and so therefore I forget to talk about the blessings that I saw that day or I miss valuable missionary opportunities. I commit to putting those things away and to instead focus on the life of my Savior.
  • ·         In order to complete this assignment, I did all the readings and cross-referenced
  • ·         I decided to choose this assignment because I KNOW that I need more help in escaping the world
  • ·         My favorite part of this assignment was the reading in the institute manual
  • ·         To make this assignment better I would have assigned another assignment that went along with this one to follow up on us

UNIT TWO- choice 1
#1 To “multiply mercy, peace and love” I feel that you must be selfless. To show mercy, peace, and love you cannot be thinking about yourself, instead you can only be thinking of others and how you can help them in anyway. By not thinking of yourself you can multiply and even triple these attributes and if you do, by the end of the day you will go to sleep happier and more fulfilled knowing that you made a difference in the world.
To “contend for the faith” you must be striving for bigger, better and greater amounts of faith. By just sitting and hoping for a stronger testimony or knowledge of our Savior, we are actually doing the exact opposite of what Jude is telling us that we need to do.  He is telling us to strive, push against the opposition and fight for the faith!
  • ·         In order to complete this assignment, I did all the readings, cross-referenced, and looked on dictionary.com for the word contend
  • ·         I decided to do this assignment because these verses in Jude stuck out to me and I wanted to understand them better
  • ·         My favorite part of this assignment was describing the scripture. By having to restate what Jude was saying, I intern learned a TON
  • ·         To make this assignment better I would have liked to learn more about Jude

·         The best part of this assignment was the different questions that I had to find
·         To make this assignment better I would have us write what we would think that the persons blessing should be since some of the people in the chapter didn’t have information about what blessings that they received

Modesty and The Priesthood

Unit 1 Choice 2
#1 Paul teaches us in 1 Tim 2:9-10 that women need to dress modestly which includes showing self-control and reverence with what we wear and not giving into having flashy and expensive clothing.
D&C 61:18, 36 give us greater insight that both men and women need not to even come close to immodesty “lest we be caught in snares.” Immodesty can steal away our virtue!
Moses 6:9, Mosiah 2:37, Alma 41:2 = 3 reasons why our bodies could be considered sacred
1.       We are created in God’s own image
2.       We must keep our bodies clean so the Lord may visit us, “for he dwelleth not in unholy temples”
3.       We must take care of our bodies because they are ours for eternity. We will one day be resurrected with these same bodies
Knowing that our bodies are sacred helps me to remember that my body is beautiful and one of a kind. I am reminded that I don’t need to alter my body in any way because God created it and He only makes perfect things. By remembering that, I am able to dress modestly because I am not looking for others approval and reactions toward my body to validate that I am beautiful
Alma 1:32 talks about wearing costly apparel
To better apply these principal in my life I can make the choice now to always dress modestly and then at the end of the day to reflect upon how I felt about myself throughout that day as I dressed modestly.
·         In order to complete this assignment I read all of the readings and then pondered about what they said
  • ·         I decided to do this assignment because recently I just watched a video about modesty that was from a nonmember which really moved me and so I wanted to learn more
  • ·         The best thing about this assignment was all of the scripture references
  • ·         This assignment could be improved by giving us scenarios and having us try to figure out how to solve them by still dressing modestly

Unit 2 Choice 1
#1 Hebrews 5:4, Numbers 27:18.23, D&C 41:11, articles of faith 1:5
In order for men to receive the priesthood authority of God must have a pure heart and then be called of God as one who is worthy of receiving his authority. Then he is given God’s authority by one who already holds the authority, who then lays his hands upon the man’s head to give him the priesthood.
We can know if a man truly has the authority of God by the Holy Ghost. We can pray and ask our Heavenly Father if certain men should be our leaders or the prophecy that they preached was true or not. “By the power of the Holy Ghost, we may know the truth of all things.”
·         In order to complete this assignment I read all of the readings and then pondered about what they said
  • ·         I decided to do this assignment to be able to learn more about the order of the priesthood
  • ·         The best thing about this assignment was all of the scripture references
  • ·         This assignment could be improved be asking s more in depth questions about the priesthood

Romans

Unit 1, Choice 1 #3
-          A list of peoples sins in Romans 1:21-32
Glorified not God, ingratitude, vain, darkened heart, professing to be wise, changed that image of God into something ordinary, uncleanly, dishonorable, lied, vile affections, homosexuality, adultery, unable to stand test, unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness, full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity, backbiters, hate, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobey parents, covenantbreakers, implacable, unmerciful, pleasure in sin
-          Highlighted are the ones that are still a problem today
-          Reason for these sins:
They thought not of God even when they knew Him and just focused on their own carnal needs
its seems in these verses that the further that these people got into sin and the forgot about God, the further “God gave them up to a retrobate.” God is bound by the law and will not give us blessings when we are going against God and so these people were just doing more and more sin because they were searching for pleasure and happiness.
-          In verse 25 when it says that the people “worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator,” this means that the people worshiped Things and items because they no longer looked to God for guidance or direction, but instead they looked to their own knowledge and carnal senses to determine happiness for themselves.
Unit 2 Choice 1 # 2
What did Paul teach in each verse that would lead that people to Salvation?
Romans 12: 1-be a living sacrifice unto God for service
2- do not be conformed to the world, but instead be transformed by renewing your mind to the will of God
9-love unconditionally, hate evil, cleave to good
13- give freely what is yours
16- be no respecter of persons, be not prideful
21- overcome evil with good
13:1- lift up others by the powers of God
3- do that which is good
8-love thy neighbor

9- don’t commit adultery, don’t kill, don’t steal, don’t bear false witness, don’t covet, love thy neighbor as thyself

1 Corr- Galations

Unit 1 Choice 4
Paul was an Apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ, and with this, he was also a missionary, friend and leader to all those he encountered. He had the responsibility to “take upon himself the name of Christ,” as do all Disciples of Christ, but then to take Christ to the whole world. This was is mission and hope for each and every day! I preached the gospel of Jesus Christ in each conversation he had, never forgetting his purpose for a second,  and then never forgot about those that he taught by writing them letters to make sure that they are on the straight and narrow path.
Paul taught me in these verses that I need to actually KNOW the people around me. Know their circumstances and challenges so that I can relate to them and then give them hope with the gospel of Jesus Christ. By doing this, others will be persuaded to know the truth and to do good because they will see that God knows them and their circumstances and that he is always providing ways to progress in this life and to be happy.
-In order to complete this assignment I read all the readings and then pondered about the questions that I needed to answer
- I decided to choose this choice because I LOVE verses 24-26 in this chapter and so I wanted to gain further insight on this chapter
-the best part of this assignment was that the questions were broad so that I could answer freely and one thing that could change would be that there could be more background to this chapter given.

Unit 2 Choice 1 #5
In these verses the Lord consoles Paul by telling him that it is okay that he isn’t perfect. I love it when the Lord says, “for when I am weak, than am I strong.” If we didn't have weakness, then we couldn't understand growth and how we become strong.
In Mosiah 24: 13-14 we see another example how the Lord visited his people and comforted them in times of trial. “He eased their burdens so that they could not feel them” but did not take away their trials all together so that they could “stand as a witness for God” This experience helps and comforts me in times of trial because I know that God loves me and will has never forgotten me when I’m going through trials, but that he is putting his trust in me that he is confident that I will make it through and grow from each trail.
-          To complete this assignment I read all the readings and pondered on the stories I read
-          I decided on this choice because I am going through some hard trials right now and I thought that this would help me

-          I liked that you gave us the scripture in Mosiah to compare to 2 Corr. but I wished that there would have been more examples

Unit 1 Choice 1
List several Themes of the Book of Acts – Acts 1-8, 10-12 & Bible Dictionary entry “Acts of the Apostles”
Twelve Apostles bear witness of Jesus Christ throughout all lands
Testify of Jesus Christ’s Resurrection
Teach of the Holy Ghost
Teach of how to gain salvation
Perform Miracles with the power of the Priesthood
Testify of the Apostasy
Teach the gospel by witnesses
Baptize and give the Gift of the Holy Ghost
Preach to everyone (not only the Jews)
Establish the Church wherever the apostles went
  • In order to complete this assignment I read in all the headings of the above chapters and wrote down specific things that the apostles did in Acts.
  • I decided to do this assignment because I had a desire to know what the main reasons were for having Acts be in the Bible and what made Acts different from  the other books in the Bible.
  • I think the best thing about this assignment was having to read just from the chapter headings. When you just read chapter after chapter you sometimes can miss the big picture of what is going on in Acts and so this assignment opened my mind to the important themes found within. This assignment could be improved by us having to read an excerpt from a current apostle about what he thinks the themes of Acts are and why they are important

Unit 2 Choice 1 #2
1.       By fasting and praying, the Lord will give you personal revelation about how you can be happy .
2.       Remember that you have had hands laid upon your head by priesthood holders who set you apart to be a missionary. With that blessing, the Lord recognized you and blessed you with special abilities to be a successful missionary. He trusts you!
3.       As a missionary, you have been blessed to have a companion and as well as other missionaries within you mission to help and support you. Just as Saul had Barnabas and John, they are able to help to give relief and to lift you up during troubled times. The Lord loves his missionaries and so he set up a perfect system to help us to be happy so use his system!
·         In completing this assignment, I read through verses and picked our key words and phrases within to help me to find doctrine that would motivate a missionary.
·         I chose to do this assignment because I have cousins on missions and so I wanted to find some uplifting words of wisdom that I could give them.
·         The best thing about this assignment was that it got me to really think and apply these 5 verses. While reading those verses previously, I did not and probably would have ever thought to apply those scriptures for guidance in that situation. Helps me to remember that I need to be pondering and really “feasting” upon the scriptures. This assignment could be improved by having several scenarios that I could relate the same scriptures to.

Stephen's Example

I love Stephen’s final words because they represent his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ by his boldness and courage to share his testimony to the wicked. He testifies of their apostasy and dissention from the word of the Lord and even boldly calls them “betrayers and murderers” since they “received the law by the disposition of angles, and have not kept it.” I know that even at this time, when Stephen was pretty fired up, he still said the things that the Lord would have him say because his words were filled with the spirit for they “cut to the heart.”

In Acts 7: 55-60 we learn that the Godhead is made of the 3 separate personages: God the Father, His son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost. We know this because as Stephen recalls, he was “filled with the Holy Ghost,” as he “looked up steadfastly into heaven and saw the glory of God AND Jesus.” I know that Stephan’s account of seeing the God and Jesus Christ is true because as I read this passage I am also filled with the Holy Ghost. Stephen’s account also helps us to know that God the Father and Jesus Christ have physical bodies due to the fact that he actually saw them.

In comparing Stephen’s death to Abinadi’s in the Book of Mormon
Similarities:
·         Killed for their unwavering belief in Jesus Christ
·         Both cried to God before their death unto God to have their spirits be received by him
·         Both would not deny the commandments of God
Differences:
·         King Noah at first did not want to kill Abinadi where everyone wanted to kill Stephen
·         Abinadi died by fie and Stephen was stoned
·         Before death Abinadi placed a curse that others would die and he had and before Stephen’s death he asked to have their sins be not upon their heads

Both of these men’s testimonies impact me each time I read them because of their unwavering faith in the God’s Plan for his children. Neither of these men ever were hostile in anyway, but were continuous examples of what it means to take upon ourselves Christ’s name.  They show me that no matter how hard our trials may be, the Lord is on our side and that the best prize that this life has to offer is in the next life to come!
